Day One FLIGHT – MALAGA - TARIFA

16:00 Visit of the Roman ruins Baleo Claudia (view of the African coastline) Drive to Tarifa

17:30 At Moorish castle in Tarifa short session “Islamic Spain: Al-Andalus and Caliphate of Cordoba.”

18:30 Check into hostel

19:30 Short walk at the Strait of Gibraltar (view of Tangier, Morocco)

20:30 Dinner. Individual time in the old town of Tarifa

Day Two TARIFA - TANGIER – RABAT

09:00 Boat trip across the Mediterranean Sea from Algeciras to Tangier Group orientation: history, cultures, practicalities

10:00 Conversation “Cultural diversity in Morocco” with Prof. Ali Azeriah and Moroccan students from L’Ecole Superior du Traductión in Tangier at the DARNA woman's centre

12:00 Lunch at DARNA

13:00 Drive to Asilah along the Atlantic Ocean

13:40 Camel ride

14:30 Walk through the Medina (old town) of Asilah with background information about the history and cultures of Asilah

16:30 Drive to Rabat (2,5 hours) Orientation homestay at a stop - Distribute emergency phone numbers

19:30 Meeting of the homestay families (Three students will stay with one family.)

20:00 Short walk through the Medina of Rabat in small groups

20:30 Dinner with homestay families Individual Time (showing pictures, visiting other families, going to a youth center, etc.)

Day Three RABAT

08:00 Breakfast with individual families

09:30 Session at the Dutch-Moroccan Institute NIMAR (eg. “What shapes the images of Moroccans in the Netherlands?” with Prof. A. Lamrani)

12:00 Visit of Roman ruins Chellah and Maousoleum

13:30 Lunch at individual families

16:00 Exploration of Rabat’s Andalusian houses in the Kashba and the street life in the medina market. (The afternoon activities will be spent in small groups to create space for authentic experiences of the places and for personal connections. Two Dutch students will be accompanied by two Moroccan students from Rabat University.)

19:00 Informal conversation “What is it like to live in Morocco as a foreigner?” with Dutch development workers and NIMAR staff at a family home in the medina.

20:30 Dinner in family home in the medina

Day Four RABAT - MARRAKECH

08:00 Breakfast with individual families

08:30 Drive to Marrakech (3.5 hrs)

12:30 Settle into Hostel

13:30 Lunch

15:00 Guided cultural visits of the Koutoubia mosque, mellah and palace Special focus: “Coexistence of Muslims and Jews.”

17:00 Informal conversation with Prof Saadi: “The impact of tourism in Marrakech and its implications for issues of globalization.”

18:30 Individual Time with Moroccan students in the medina Dinner individually at Jemaa el-Fna

Day Five MARRAKECH – AMZAMIZ

08:30 Breakfast and Check out

09:30 Drive to AmzAmiz

10:00 Camel ride

11:00 Orientation: differences between urban and rural Morocco, homestay, etc.

12:00 Arrival in AmzAmiz Meet host family and host sister

13:30 Lunch with host families

15:30 Experiences in town with host sisters: pottery activity, etc.

18:30 Dar Shebab activity

20:00 Dinner with family Individual time with family

Day Six AMZAMIZ – IMLIL, HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS

08:30 Breakfast with family

09:30 Visit of a women’s project with Latifa near AmzAmiz Hike to mountain village house: bread making Snack: fruits and fresh bread

12:30 Short soccer game with girls-team in town

14:00 Lunch with family Siesta

15:30 Good bye to families Drive to Berber village Imlil

17:00 Arrival Imlil and Check in Hotel

18:30 Walk to Kashba, seeing projects

20:00 Group Dinner

21:30 Integration session (30 min)

Day Seven IMLIL – MARRAKECH - FLIGHT

08:30 Breakfast

09:30 Hike to Waterfalls with local Peace Corps Volunteer

10:30 Orientation: future opportunities of volunteer work

12:00 Drive towards Marrakech
