Eight Day Program for Documentary Film Students

Brief itinerary Example

Crossing Borders Education offers hands on documentary workshops for film schools in Europe and the US.

(Activities will be custom-tailored to the specific needs of each educational institution.)

Day 1 Flight – Gibraltar or Malaga - Tarifa, SPAIN

• Flight to Gibraltar, UK or Malaga, Spain from any European city or the US
• Transfer to Tarifa (with view of the Strait of Gibraltar)
• Study: “Historic and cultural links between Africa and Europe.”
• Cultural visits: Moorish castle in Tarifa
• Hands on: filming in the old town of Tarifa (with view of the African coastline)

Day 2 Tarifa – Tangier – Rabat, MOROCCO

• Boat trip across the Mediterranean Sea
• Visit of DARNA women’s center
• Study “Introduction to Morocco: cultural diversity, education, and gender issues.”
• Hands on: filming in the old town of Asilah (with Arab, Jewish and European heritage)
• Nights in Rabat with Moroccan host families in the medina (old town)

Day 3 Rabat

• Study: “The Muslim and the Western worlds: images about each other.”
• Workshop: “Documentary Making I” with film maker Basel Ramsel
• Cultural visit of the Mausoleum of King Mohammed V
• Hands on: filming of Rabat’s street life
• Discussion of filmed materials

Day 4 Rabat

• Study: “The role of media for the formation of preconceptions.”
• Workshop: “Documentary Making II” with film maker Basel Ramsel
• Hands on: filming of the home stay families
• Screening of documentary by Basel Ramses, analyses and debate

Day 5 Rabat – Fez - Sefrou

• Transfer to Fez
• Study: “The contrast of Muslim and Western images about Islam.”
• Cultural visits: medresa and souqs in the medieval medina of Fez (old town)
• Hands on: filming of Rabat’s street life
• Transfer to Sefrou (40 min)

Day 6 Sefrou

• Study: “Centuries of coexistence of cultures in Morocco.”
• Cultural visits of Sefrou which had once a Jewish population of nearly 40%
• Hands on: filming of the medieval old town of Sefrou
• Discussion of filmed material
• Nights in Sefrou with Moroccan host families

Day 7 Sefrou - Fez

• Workshop: “Documentary Making III” with Basel Ramses
• Hands on: filming of two local development projects in small groups
• Afternoon hike to a Berber village in the Middle Atlas mountains

Day 8 Fez - Flight

• Writing activities for the integration of experiences
• Setting tasks how to use the filmed material when returning
• Transfer to Fez airport (1 hr)
• Return flight
